W. J. Walls Heritage Hall
Archive and Museum

Serving as an institutional center for African, and African American life and culture.

The W. J. Walls Heritage Hall was dedicated on Founder's Day of 1969. At the 85th annual commencement of Livingstone College, Salisbury, NC, June 1967, Bishop W. J. Walls, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Senior Bishop of the A.M.E. Zion Church, made the following announcement:

I am giving Livingstone Collage a Heritage House...In my travels through 53 countries and studies covering 60 years, I have sensed a great need for more knowledge of people of color in the literature and forces that have governed the world. Greater emphases on our history and racial heritage are needed …

Our Story

Heritage Hall suffered from a damaged roof and water damage. This resulted in the facility being closed for 13 years, and the collection hastily removed to safety to an offsite location. Eventually funding was found to repair the building and in January of 2024 the delicate process of returning the collection to Heritage Hall began.

Even with the repairs there was much still to be done to make Heritage Hall once again a repository of historical artifacts and documents. We are still in that process; however, we have been fortunate to re-open the main floor to provide tours and exhibits while continuing to unpack and organize the many historical collections.

In addition, since re-opening we have acquired new collections to enhance the mission of this archive. These include the Peck Family Collection which is a stunning collection of African art, crafts, fabrics, carvings, and other artifacts from all over the western continent of Africa.  We also have gained a vital donation through the Gerald Butler Schrader Collection of hand written and typed speeches originally belonging to Livingston College's founder and first president Dr. Joseph C. Price. Both of these collections are currently on display on the main floor of Heritage Hall.
